So Where in the World Are You Zoooming From?

Where in the World Are You Zoooming From

One of the things that we take pride in at Zooomr is that you all, the photographers on Zooomr, really are truly a global bunch. As the most localized photo sharing site in the world today, Zooomr continues to strive to make the site globally accessible and photographers are uploading an amazing amount of international photos from all corners of the earth.

I thought I’d share a geo map overlay representing a breakdown of Zooomr’s traffic thus far for the month of June. As you can see, at present Zooomr’s traffic is pretty evenly divided between the Americas, Asia and Europe. Top regional locations / cities include Taiwan and Beijing, London, San Francisco, Los Angeles and most recently the Petah Tikva district of Central Israel (last week Zooomr received a very positive review and tied for the top 4.5 star rating amongst photo sharing sites in Israel’s largest newspaper).

In addition to some of the major cities of Europe, Asia and the Americas, there is also smaller amounts of Zooomr activity going on in Africa, Australia and other places around the globe.

All of the translation work on Zooomr has been done by volunteers. To learn more about how you can help translate Zooomr into additional languages you can check out this Google Group on localization for Zooomr here.

    London! But without wishing to sound remotely anti-American, it is really good to feel part of a web community that is not overwhelmingly dominated by North America. Zooomr’s resolute internationalism, and dedication to being multi-lingual, is one of its most attractive and admirable qualities. We need a community which not only bridges the Atlantic, but goes beyond merely Europe and America to embrace the world’s true diversity. I pay tribute to your and Kris’s commitment to seeing beyond your back yard. Thanks!

    I agree with Steve. However, I’m slowly but surely trying to make Flagstaff, Arizona a photography mecca on Zooomr. Heh. :-)

    Thanks for sharing this. It’s fun to see where my fellow Zooomrites (philes/ans/ers) are from.

    A nice spread of spots there. Have you thought about letting people translate your blog entries as well, I don’t know how you would go about it but it would be good for people to know about these cool things in their native tongue.

    Hey choffee, yeah some of the posts are translated onto other language Zooomr blogs. If you look at the top of this page you’ll see the other translations. Original posts are also on these blogs as well. It’s up to the individual bloggers on what they translate and repost vs. write on their own etc.

    While we’re in a trivial mood, have a look at the map pic above, then consider Rule 9 of the Terms of Service here… “The Web Site is intended for hosting digital photographs; therefore, uploading non-photographic images is prohibited.”

    Excuse me for posting unrelated request here because I couldn’t find anywhere on zooomr.com to send questions or ask for help. Many of my pictures are shown as “ZOOOMR - THIS PHOTO IS CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE”. It has been like that for several month. Any fix?

    @Zhou:

    That only happens (so far as I’ve seen) on pictures that are smaller than a certain pixel size.

    kristopher is aware of the issue, and I have given him more than one primary example.

    He knows about it, and will fix it, but he doesn’t consider it a ‘crucial’ issue because pictures aren’t meant to be so small that this problem occurs.
