YouTube and Vimeo Infowidgets

YouTube Infowidget on Zooomr

One of the things that we are excited about here at Zooomr is the future for what we are calling infowidgets. Infowidgets are a new type of metadata where you can associate virtually anything with a photograph. Some of this data is fairly simple and straightforward labels (i.e. tags), geotags, etc. Other meta data is more specific. What you might price a photo at in Marketplace for instance or PeopleTags. But by building a platform for infowidgets. Lots of other cool things can be done with photo pages. Two of the infowidgets that I’m most excited about are the infowidgets for YouTube and Vimeo. Basically these widgets allow you to imbed both YouTube and Vimeo videos on a photo detail page.

In order to embed a video info widget it’s actually pretty simple. You simply type some code into the label/tag box and it translates it into a video on the page.

Both YouTube and Vimeo use code to embed your videos. The sample format is below.

Vimeo: vimeo:clip=12345
YouTube: youtube:clip=UTh0JhzWssw

So basically you just enter in any Vimeo or YouTube clip number(you get this from the URL of either a Vimeo or YouTube page) and the video then gets embedded into your photo page.

To see an example of some of the interesting things people are doing with the Vimeo and YouTube infowidgets check out Davis Freeberg’s photo from this weekend’s Robogames in San Francisco here, Pikamookie’s interaction with a cicada here, or Saxman’s video of his son Kai-Jai here.

Have you made an interesting Vimeo or YouTube infowidget? If so feel free to share a link to it in the comments and tag your photo YouTube or Vimeo so that others can find them on Zooomr.

This is great! How cool is that…on you tube it is easy to record something straight to the site and then include it on your zooomr pic. Very Nice.

While I think this is a cool tool (and I really do think it is), I’d like to see some of the functionality that was here come back before new tools are added.

I know it is exciting to add new functions. And I’m excited to see them.

But it is also frustrating when things that used to work no longer do.

Please, please fix the bugs before introducing new functions. I, for one, would really appreciate that.

And believe me, when I say, that this is not a criticism. I love Zooomr and am excited about the future of this site. I’m just a bit perplexed at the timeline of things that are happening.

    Thanks, guys. :-)

I’m with dawn on this point. Every day I check to see what’s been fixed, which broken Mark II features I used are back or fixed. And each day, I’m disappointed. Most of my pictures are gone, except for the thumbnails. And nothing has changed, except the censorship policy, this latest feature, etc.

  5. Karoli said on 18 Jun 2007 at 5:15 pm:

This is very, very cool. I hear what others are saying about bringing back the other features and maybe it’s because I hadn’t used a lot of them that it’s not bothering me as much, but this is something I was wishing for on Flickr as recently as yesterday.

Youtube support now too? Awesome work, Kris!

    Dave,

Why does your photo show the camera info? Are newly uploaded pictures getting this when old when still have it missing?

    Don

  9. dawn said on 18 Jun 2007 at 5:47 pm:

Don, some cameras are getting it and others aren’t. Thomas said Kris was working on it.

When is the ScobleShow infowidget planned, to embed the ScobleShow episodes directly in the detail page of all your photowalking pictures ? ;)

I know this is a blog but why can’t I sign up for Zooomer? I fill out all the info but it won’t let me click on any submit button. I can’t contact customer support either.

  13. Akiraman said on 18 Jun 2007 at 9:43 pm:

Hi Kris Nice feature but it takes too many steps to do for non tech savvy user. Also new users might fumble with the code. Maybe put a link to the instructions? Or

Might I suggest that you have a separate Entry box for video, for the user to input someting like

    [youtube:clip (User enters the code)]

or perhaps you could have the user just copy and paste the youtube URL and Zooomr will trasnlate it into the video link?

Sry if I my comments/feedback may seem negative but I would like to see Zooomr improve in ease of use overtime. Its a good feature I hope you will improve it overtime. Congrats on the Webware Top 100

  14. Carlos said on 19 Jun 2007 at 2:06 am:

I agree with Akiraman, this could be easier for all of us by giving a template in which you only paste the code.

all in all, this truly is awesome!

    this is my first attempt!

Can zooomr handle the the added strain of vimeo and youtube inclusions on its current hardware? I ask as a non-IT zooomr user…

I welcome all these developments, but like dawn, my priority is stability (much better now), speed(also much better) and the basic photography functionality that M2 had with the added photography features of M3.

I’m not going to go anywhere, I’m staying with zooomr because I really like everything about the site, and it’s amazing value. Just thought that it’s necessary for all users to share all their views.

Keep up the good work guys

    Nice feature! It’s great!
One question, can you add support for blip.tv?
That site even let you point to the .flv file!
    Thanks…

    I’m with Dawn.

Where is RSS? How do I add descriptions to photos without first having to click save on the title?

I’m all for features but can I have the bugfixes first? Smartsets?

Where is the ability to change your email address, your avatar or your display name? Posting photos to groups seems like another big requirement but we get the ability to show Youtube videos? Recent activity, notification emails on activity all seem to be falling to the way side.

I would hope the focus would be on the essentials and adding this “value” later. I still love the Zooomr, but please can the focus be on the required features. :)

I’m with dawn as well. I like new features but I would also like old Mark II. features back. Keep up good work.

  19. Florian said on 19 Jun 2007 at 7:53 am:

I’m with dawn too. I think it’s an interesting feature but i’t would be also great if you fix some major bugs befor making new features. Thanks for your great site Kris and Thomas!

Get adapted to Zooomr, not getting Zooomr to adapt you!

  21. Thomas Hawk said on 19 Jun 2007 at 8:39 am:

Guys, please keep in mind that this is functionality that was already built into Mark III. I was just doing a post highlighting it. This is not something that Kristopher has been working on at the expense of fixing bugs and getting other new features online.

He is working super, super hard at getting bugs fixed and old features back online.

This has actually been available since launch but we never had a post explaining to people how to do this.

Thanks all for your support. We are working hard at making our Zooomr the best for all of us. And expect to see continued improvements in terms of bug fixed and old features back online in the short-term.

Hang in there guys. We are working hard.

  22. Jon said on 19 Jun 2007 at 8:59 am:

thomas - we do really appreciate the work going into this…i think it’s perhaps there was more definite info forthcoming on new features, which is understandable, and less on the timescale for older features coming back online (i know it may be difficult estimating this).

  23. Ray Booysen said on 19 Jun 2007 at 10:03 am:

Fantastic Thomas, thanks for clearing that up.

    Makes me feel better. :)

    Gooooooooooooo Zooomr

  24. maxav said on 19 Jun 2007 at 1:16 pm:

thanks thomas for cearing this up! we’ll stay with zooomr and will watch how it grows!

  27. John Cooper said on 21 Jun 2007 at 1:49 am:

It would be cool if you could create a bookmarklet that when you clicked on it gave you the tag that you can cut and paste into your zooomr window.

Also it would be good if you could persuade vimeo to have a zooomr button as well as a flickr one on their page.

On a different note. Things are getting better! The site is loads faster and I can see small bits of polish going on. The geo-tagging now works great. Coming along nicely.

    Thanks a lot guys.

  28. zhu said on 21 Jun 2007 at 5:31 pm:

    @John Cooper

Actually, if you had browse Kris’ pictures about Mark III, there is actually a link where you can click and add these Infowidgets.
