Just Launched New Languages: 9 in Total!

Hey Friends, a lot of hard work has gone into our localizations from people from all around the world. Today, we’ve launched even more languages in the hopes that more people will help us unite the world.

If you happen to speak English and another language really well, be sure to checkout the Zooomr Localization Google Group and help us unite the world!

With love and respect,

kristopher

    Una gran noticia, felicidades!!!

  2. Anon Says:

If I take part in Zooomr, do I _have_ to “unite the world”?

I was hoping to simply store porn on there…

  3. Omar Says:

Adding new languages is great and all, but how about spending some time fixing the broken feature in MK3 like Smart Sets, EXIF data, Track Backs, Favorites, etc. before adding new features and attracting more users that could potentially overload your system again.

  4. Unimpressed Says:

    Whoopee-doo.

Now we can see the faults on here in at least ten languages.

More work on the icing, while the cake beneath goes mouldy.

  5. Carlos Says:

    felicidades! gracias por este adelanto!

  6. Joker Says:

A joke. It must be a joke.

And they will continue it until next April 1st to see how many fools are willing to be mocked this way.

  7. PT Says:

I have to agree with Omar. Priority of the fixes is a bit odd. It would be nice to have jUploadr running again so that people could actually start putting some photos here.

  8. Chimton Says:

I too would like to see the promised features working on the site. I see no reason for added languages when many of the “new features” do not work. Smart sets need to be fixed, juploader needs to be fixed, send photos to groups doesnt work, invite people to groups doesnt work, add moderators and admins to groups doesnt work and a host of other things do not work. Im less concerned with people being able to pick their language then I am about having the rest of the site working as promised. Could you post something to this blog that gives us an ETA as to when all of these needed features will be working?

  9. Sam Says:

    Danke!

  10. killercup Says:

good work! but i think the english version is still the best for me while some german tranlation are just crazy and incomplete ;)

  11. Marcos Says:

Que bien!, felicidades por el trabajo!

  12. JeffH Says:

I must agree with a couple of the posters above. We really need the basic site functions to work, and at a minimum, have the features that worked in MK2 working in MK3 before adding new features. Adding more localization seem very low priority to my mind. jUploader is one feature that really needs to be fixed.

In the name of continued transparency, would it be possible to provide at least a high level prioritization and timeline for implementation of broken MK2 features as well as the most pressing new MK3 features? Posting a weekly update on the Blog or adding a page to the Wiki would be great.

I am quite happy with the significantly improved stability and speed. Thanks!

  13. Carsten Says:

I have to fall into choire: Fix the functionality before adding new stuff. I mean, it’s not onky that things dont work - its deteriorating. Till yesterday at least some of my smartsets did work. Today they all show “0 images”.

  14. disappointed Says:

    Flickr: Zooomr on steroids

  15. CY Says:

Yes, I also agree with other guys here. Please, please do fix some of the crucial bugs asap. To me the current zooomr is really unusable.

  16. yj Says:

More than 3 weeks after the official launch date, and so many of the basic functions are still lacking, and this guy is “really really” excited that 9 languages are just added.

Perhaps Zooomr is truly redefining everything.
It redefines LAUNCH — now it means shut down the whole thing and takes some indefinite time to get the new version going.
It redefines PRIORITY — now it means whatever this boy fancy doing, regardless of the overall condition of the whole project.

Hey guys, it’s time to face reality. Zooomr is afterall the hobby of a smart kid who likes to play around with new ideas. It is not meant for the public.
A fantastic idea undelivered is just a fantasy.

BTW, when they say “unite the world”, that scares me. I don’t want to be united under a overly clever boy who does not care the reality side of things.

  17. natalief Says:

How do I delete my accounts and all of my photos from zooomr? Deleting the photos one by one is SO tedious…

  18. natalief Says:

I have deleted all of my photos now so don’t bother emailing me the reply. I’d live to know how to delete the userpic from my profile though.

I have decided, though, to keep my account here in case, one day, zooomr may actually become usable.

Can I suggest that you might consider employing more than one developer and some project management?

  19. IsThisTheReason Says:

    Is This Y ?

Is this the reason y, new languages r being realized here, when there are other bigger open issues that needs a FIX ?

  20. Fajro Says:

    Well…

The language support is very important for some people! (like me)
    Zooomr is free and innovative!

Usually my comments are just a smile. , but I am really tired to read the complaints of these flickrfans.

    Plese moderate the comments!

Why you don’t go to comment to Flickrblog and to stop irking?

What? In the blog of Flickr cannot put comments? :P

Yahoo! has hundreds of employees and has delayed more than two years in translating its interface!

That’s a Joke! (or lack of respect?)

  21. Doug Says:

I may agree with the amount and severity of the bugs in MIII, but I also understand the importance of language support. In some respects, the essence and concept of zooomr is built around languages and it’s accessibility to as many nations as possible. Okay, so the languages are in place: it’s now time to fix some major bugs, the usability of zooomr is severely lacking right now. My mom has been asking for weeks about the photos from our cruise to Alaska. Everyone knows that you’re not supposed to piss off your mom!

  22. Hasan Diwan Says:

You lazy chaps who are waiting for jUploadr (and its ilk) to work again ought to bloody well write your own uploaders if you’re so keen on getting them working.

In all seriousness, it takes time to get any site up and running. Having people breathe down Mr Tate’s neck isn’t going to help it get done any faster.

  23. McBLG Says:

wouldn’t getting your users back online in a language they understand be more important than a silly feature that makes no functional difference?.. I would hate to see the sh*t storm if it wasn’t localized in english.

anyway, Zooomr is rocking along nicely. fast and clean. you can see where things are already great, and going to get better.

thanks for all your work so far kris and thomas…

  24. JeffH Says:

I’m a little taken aback by Fajro’s comments. First of all I saw only one mention of Flickr in this thread until his post. I personally do not use Flickr. Lurking? Where? As far as moderating this thread, I think the comments above are all fairly civil, factual and to the point. There is nothing wrong with constructive criticism, in fact in this case I believe it is quite appropriate. When a company presents itself as a professional entity providing a service that is an alternative to other well established professionally run companies, there is an expectation of a certain level of functionality, performance, and stability. I believe that for the moment anyway, Zooomr has addressed the performance and reliability issues. Now it’s time to address the functionality.

  25. Fogview_Tom Says:

I agree that Zooomr has had it growing pains and there a number of features disabled/broken but the site is very stable now. I believe the main goal after the re-launch was to get the site running and stable so it’s usable again.

A core set of users have been documenting the bugs and adding them to the Zooomr Wiki. Kris is working on the bugs/features and has been very responsive in keeping the site going. Fixing the bugs and enabling all the features will take time and we all need to be patient and help document the problems when we find them.

Since Zooomr is touted as an international site with many users outside the United States, I can understand why adding additional language support at this time is important. I’ve heard Kris mention numerous times how important his international users are, so adding this support does make sense to me.

Kris is working hard to resolve all the Zooomr problems and he deserves our support.

  26. Carlos Says:

Hi all, I think that some of this comments could be re-expressed in constructive criticism. However, those really ’sore souls’ should remember (or find out, as it may be more appropriate) how the ‘e-life’ works. These guys (zooomr) have done their professional bit by accepting they fell short while trying to deliver and are working really hard to achieve.

If, still, some of you are not happy please feel free to go elsewhere. Nobody is stopping you, or is there? The answer is obvious, this is going to be a great service and you are upset cause you can’t wait to see it on the fly!! Patience!!!!!!!!

  27. Vincent Says:

Perhaps anyone would care to notice that adding new languages is not done instead of improving existing features? Translating is not done by Kristopher but by volunteers, so while Zooomr is being translated bugs can still be fixed.

Wouldn’t you be happy if there were a lot of volunteers who did all this work of translating such a site for you?

  28. Gnurou Says:

Haha. Best one. Just checked out Flickr, and its now available in 8 languages. :p It’s too fun to have been planned. The translation is clean, and the rest of the site works too. Sorry guys, choice is made. Looking forward for the ‘delete my account’ button (which Flickr has already)

  29. Unimpressed Says:

So just how hard is it to fix, say, the sets/tags issue? It worked before Mk III, it can’t be radically different now, can it?

  30. Thomas Says:

Where can I submit bugs? Every time I upload a png file it works, but at the original size I get “This image is not available”. Please Fix

  31. CY Says:

I really think that the settings of privacy and tags when photos are being uploaded is extremely important. This bug should have the priority. Please fix it first. If you cannot tag a photo or set the privacy level on it, zooomr will be of no use.

  32. striatic Says:

about development on flickr versus development on zooomr:

zooomr does not innovate or develop as quickly as flickr does.

zooomr “releases” more frequently than flickr does, but that isn’t the same thing.

what this means is that every 2 to 3 months, flickr is going to come out with something that really thumps zooomr on the nose.

the answer to this problem relationship is simple. zooomr has to stop aping/merely bettering flickr functionality. otherwise, they’ll never be able to keep up while keeping the site stable. they’ll have to choose one or the other.

zooomr’s core innovation could have been marketplace. things like groups do not contribute to marketplace, and it seems to me that groups really haven’t taken off. further, discover and zipline aren’t set up in a way that is geared toward the social evaluation of images for the purposes of marketplace, an idea i could get into that in more depth, but i won’t. basically i see a lot of attention paid to things that don’t really develop zooomr as a sustainable platform.

however, contrary to what a lot of people are saying here, localization probably aren’t one of those distractions. the localization is done by volunteers, is structured in a fairly automated way, and i doubt it cuts into kris’ dev time all that much.

if we were talking about “portals II, people portals!” yawl’d have a point .. but localization shouldn’t be as distracting as some are suggesting.

  33. striatic Says:

especially since localizations were in mark II and they’re just doing something they already had done before.

  34. Zarko Says:

PLEASE, CAN YOU FOCUS ON WHAT IS IMPORTANT??? I CANNOT USE THE BASIC FEATURES OF ZOOOMR FOR AT LEAST 3 WEEKS NOW!! AS “Unimpressed” ALREADY SAID …

  35. Chris Nixon Says:

Listen guys, I’m all for complaining, but when it comes to priorities, surely people being able to understand what is written on the site is top priority. If the site was only available in traditional Chinese, us English only speakers would not complain…we would simply go elsewhere. Zooomr cannot afford to let that happen.

Internationalisation is HUGELY important to the success of the site, and after stability, is probably most important.

  36. Now now now Says:

I want French language and Hindi on the site.

  37. YS Says:

There is only 1 person working…

PATIENCE is really important. I believe we can only wait.

  38. James Says:

I can wait. But there seems to be a consensus about some MAJOR bugs. I really think that fixing these crucial bugs should have the priority. In addition, I think giving back the pro4life badge should be able to boost the confidence of the zooomr fans!

  39. striatic Says:

    don’t:

“I really think that fixing these crucial bugs should have the priority.”

    and

“I think giving back the pro4life badge should be able to boost the confidence of the zooomr fans!”

seem slightly at odds with each other?

  40. natalief Says:

Surely it is worth getting the site working before or at the same time as (and not, as you seem to be doing, after) releasing thousands of translations?

  41. Unimpressed Says:

I think I would rather pay for something that actually works, instead of getting a multi-lingual non-runner for free.

  42. Unimpressed Says:

OK, enough is enough, looks like nobody in authority has the balls to even acknowledge reading this blog, let alone reply on it.

I’m off to Flickr, if I can struggle past all these tumbleweeds.
