Update on Zooomr Mark III

by Thomas Hawk | 23 May 2007 | Announcements | 44 Comments

Kristopher is working. We have no ETA. Hopefully soon. Bear with us. It’s really coming. If we don’t have an ETA it’s dumb to try to guess an ETA and disappoint. We will update people when we do have an ETA. You can check out the UStream feed below in the meantime. Thanks for your support.

    Hello Kris and Thomas,
blog updates are a nice thing.
All your work is wonderful. Thank you very much and good luck for the last moments of that difficult upgrade.
    See you soooooooooooooooooon!

there shouldn’t be an ETA - in Web 2.0, everything would be in perpetual beta according to O’Reilly :)

This downtime is really too long: how could you propose Zooomr as a professional service?

  5. SM said on 23 May 2007 at 1:58 pm:

Yeah, so you can run your business just showing developers working, without releasing anything…
Cool, this looks like Web 3.0!

It’s funny you should mention the ETA - I completely agree. I also think you would have done better if you stuck to that point the last few times we got an ETA :P

No matter. Good luck with fixing w/e is causing trouble/moving the data!

For Kris’ birthday, I’m going to give him dev and QA environments ;)

Of course, we have a few of those at my company and still mess things up…

I think your work on the application is both awesome and inspirational. All good things are worth waiting for and no one will die because of downtime.

A wise woman once said, “Baby, we can do it. Take your time. Do it right. We can do it, baby.”

Make sure to get some sunshine, too!

Just curious why don’t you have a sysadmin? I know Kris is a talented programmer but I think you could really use a unix admin or something to help things along. I’d get my ass handed to me if I couldn’t deliver my projects in a timely fashion. I can kick out a hpux or linux oracle cluster that is secure, stable, and optimized in about 4 hours but it would take me 10x longer to write a simple php application. I hope you can hire someone to help out where you are weak. Plus you won’t have to work so damn hard. Good luck I really hope to see your efforts come to life. It looks very exciting.

I do admit, I’d like Zooomr to be up right now, this snow is amazing.

    But I digress…

Although I was enthusiast about Zooomr, this Mark III show (that lasts since more than 2 months now) has totally killed my hopes. And made me realize that behind this huge thing are basically 2 guys, one of which is over-exploited, with no money or investor to run the business. And now a 12 hours downtime is turning into a no-eta outage. Will we see Mark II back again in a few days? With photosets not working, and buggy privacy settings? :/

I don’t mean to panic, but all of this is very bad signs to me. How can you guarantee that Zooomr is not going to collapse without a sign one day soon? Most of us can’t jeopardize our photos.

Sorry to sound negative, but I’m on really on the verge of moving to some other service which I’m sure will still be standing in one or two years. And paying for that is not a problem. Please be clear about the current situation. Another “promised promised it’s coming soon” and I definitely move. This is totally un-professional.

Nothing in life is guaranteed, least of all internet services. Doesn’t matter how large or how small the company on the other end, you never know when (or if) they will go tits up.

Gnurou: I agree with what you are saying here, I am also a lil disapointed and would hope to be able to showcase my pictures to friends and family. I am one of the top 10 picture uploaders on zooomr, I take lots of pics and upload a lot. I miss em, I miss zooomr MII. However You have to realize zoomr is a business but primarily a community, where we understand each other more and more compared to other site that just make descision and we have to abide or make changes and we have to follow; Zooomr gives us a chance to share and propose. Zooomr lets us make the site even more universal.
    Zooomr is web2.0 on steroids.
    It is real “LIVE” collaboration.
    Real user participation.
    Welcome to Web 2.0 gnurou.
    Welcome to Zooomr

Thanks Gnurou, I said as much in my last post and was called a troll. I’m not out to try and ruin someone at all, just very disappointed as with a little guidance and forward thinking zooomr could be so great… shame.

  14. Daren said on 23 May 2007 at 7:34 pm:

Hey Kris and Thomas - good luck with the tranistion. I for one will be here when you are back up!

  15. Gnurou said on 23 May 2007 at 7:46 pm:

C’mon guys, don’t be so idealistic and dreamy. It’s about sharing pictures, not curing cancer. We just want it to work, well and fast. Even though the features video is appealing, that’s all we have and that’s basically nothing. That and some cam that makes you believe the upgrade is being done and you are so well-informed about what’s going on while things may (and seems to) get f*cked again and you actually know nothing. A little blog post every two hours or so would be much more informative, would give the guys a little break, and would not give me that feeling of chasing smoke.

I’m also really concerned about the medium to long term viability of Zooomr. Since Kris announced with a big smile that the investors ran away, I really wonder what is going to happen.

I speak without actually knowing what is going on there, but hey, please let us know guys. THAT is what I call respecting users.

You’re partially right Marvin when you say all this fuss is part of so-called “Web 2.0″. But Web 2.0 is also about compagnies closing without warning. The last signs about the health and future of Zooomr are not good at all - and as users, we can be legitimately concerned about it. Considering the size of Zooomr structure (2 people!), information should be easy to come to us. Yet it doesn’t. Is that because they don’t want to?

Please, some REAL information guys. This “very very soon” game is running for too long. Still wishing you to succeed, despite my doubts.

  16. Roger said on 23 May 2007 at 7:46 pm:

You’ve obviously changed your mode because you were giving an ETA of 12-24 hours over 24 hours ago.

I’ve never heard of a service that goes completely down during an upgrade. Usually the old one is kept alive and the new one is tested behind the scenes and the brought online when ready with minimal down time.

  17. Thomas Hawk said on 23 May 2007 at 8:30 pm:

Guys, this is the last time that Zooomr will have to go down this way. Kristopher has rebuilt Zooomr from the ground up. Everything is new. Once this upgrade is in place future upgrades will be much more frequent and will not require us to go offline to implement them. This is a major new build and release and was necessary to allow Zooomr to scale more than anything.

You will enjoy the new Zooomr though. Just bear with us and believe me when I say that nobody wants the upgrade up more than Kristopher and I right now.

I miss Zooomr as well. I am also worried if my photos would still be here in 3 years time. But I will stick by Zooomr, and I hope someone can buy it to provide the necessary finances. I can’t wait for Mark III. I just know it will be awesome.

  21. Carlos said on 23 May 2007 at 11:46 pm:

I just thought I needed to disagree with all those pessimistic souls out there. your endeavor (zooomr) is amazing and is such that there is no other FREE service like this (personal contact to the owners, insider knowledge of whats happening, unlimited storage, and soooo many other good things).

To those who think this should be a 10 minute fix please rest assured, e-matters are more complex than that, specially when you are only a bunch of guys following your passions.

can’t wait to see it, keep the good work!

  22. kay said on 24 May 2007 at 12:49 am:

Firstly, thanks for building Zooomr. The new features look very promising and I like your attitude towards selling photos and allowing unlimited uploads. I hope it works out for you as everyone stands to gain a lot if this model is successful.

However, as other visitors have pointed out, it is rather unprofessional to should down your service for an upgrade. Even more so when you miss your own timelines by a large margin. In the world of Web 2.0, upgrades happen silently and transparently. Let the user experience and new features speak for themselves before making bold announcements and then fail to live up to the hype your created.

I understand you guys are small and don’t have a lot of cash to invest in redundant servers, etc. but you are damaging your own future prospects. Not to belittle Kristopher’s achievement, but there are many kids out there capable of hacking together a Flickr clone. Having the maturity to do a smooth rollout and deal with the operational stuff that comes afterwards is what makes all the difference. Unfortunately, so far you come as a bunch of cowboys, or worse yet, a single lonesome hacker unable to deliver a working system. I hope you realize the damage you are doing to Zooomr and will find ways of dealing with these issues in the future.

Wish you luck & don’t forget to sleep from time to time :-)

Докато, изцяло в “стила” на Web 2.0 - където, както казва Тим О’Райли, “всичко е в постоянен бета-стадий” - двамата човека зад Zooomr, най-вече млад…

You shouldn’t be relying on any online service to act as your archival unless they are expressly providing a guarantee of some sort. Do your own backups.
