The Road to Mark III — Where We’re At
by Kristopher Tate | 22 May 2007 | Adventures, Announcements, System Notices | 35 Comments
Hey Friends, It’s been a productive and satisfying last 24 hours. Many of you have been sticking with us in the UStream.TV Chat that we’re running — thanks for all of your impressive display of support!
So, the biggest thing that we’re doing here is working through all of the database translation from one system to the next, not to mention bringing-up satellite systems in remote regions all around the world. The latest issue had to do with some smartsets that weren’t processing correctly.
We will continue to update this post periodically, but please make sure to check-in with our Live 24×7 chat, courtesy of UStream.TV. (Regional coverage is also provided by our community blogs, shown in the header of this blog)
With much love and respect,

It’s been awesome in the chat…. hope to see UStreams occur even after the migration!
Good luck finishing everything up, the finished product will be great.
Thanks for playing my request.
Hi Kristopher!
I can’t wait to see it… I’m especially excited by the market place and the API… ☺
Thank you so much for all the job done!
Would you be interested in using Tangler (http://www.tangler.com) discussion system to get feedback from user on the new Zooomr?
Tangler is some kind of “forum 2.0” that allows its users to post video (screencasts) and screenshots very easily, which is very helpful when beta testing web applications.
We have a whole bunch a web 2.0 beta using Tangler at the moment (you can check it out here: http://web20.tangler.com/).
Of course Tangler is free for both users and websites, and I could assist you to get started.
Feel free to contact me. I will also drop an email to Thomas regarding that.
Good luck for the re-opening! ☺
How about the support for IE ?
Hope to see Mark III soon. I am eager to like to know what API would be provided. Thanks for your effort.
To which we still all ask - why oes the site need to be down for database translations and bringing up remote sites?
No dry runs etc? Or did you and this is different due to the size of the db?
But it isn’t so good luck Kris and Thomas ( and whoever wlse is in the den ). See you on UStream
Hope to see Mark 3 very soon. All the best guys..
Hope to see Mark III soon, but hey do not forget to get good rest!!!
Thanks Kris!! The Ustream show was a great idea, although I did feel like I was watching the Trueman Show when I spent 5 minutes watching Thomas asleep!
“To which we still all ask - why oes the site need to be down for database translations and bringing up remote sites?”
Probably to make sure that nothing is lost in the db in the migrating process.
If photos were to be added during that translation process, it would have to be done over again to include the new photos…
My 0.02$.
Hope it continues to go well.
I’ll make my donation when you’re back up and running with Zooomr III
Kris, I need upload pics to my account, I am reconstructing my blog and… Good, with Mark III we will be all better. Congratulations.
love and Kisses
Faby
Remember… The sky it the limit… but I think… no limit for the people with talent and free vision, a wide vision in a new world.
We and you are free in the Zooomr country… “Zooomrland”, a nice and wonderfull world at creativity and liberty (sorry with my English).
With love
Faby
“Are we there yet?”…”No”…”Are we there yet?”…”No”…”Are we there yet?”…”No”…”Are we there yet?”…”NOOOOOOOOO”
the patience is the mother of science
hey guys,
I just realised I couldn’t update more photos and decided to check what was happening. I’m very impressed with your work and just want to say ‘well done, amazing job, keep it up!’
Poooftr Mark III - attempt number 2? 3? 17?
It appears that Zooomr is once again trying to break the land speed record for missing a published site-wide conversion/upgrade window. The other day they were to be down for 12-24 hrs and we’re somewhere past the 40 hour marker and still count…
This is totally amateurish. If Mr. Hawk was simply a member, rather than CEO, I’m sure he would be a vocal, public critic of this disaster and likely cancel his Zooomr account.
I’m sure that Kris and Thomas are working very hard at getting the site up and running asap. Thank you guys so much for pouring your hearts into this project.
To those bitching so much: go somewhere else. You’re not the ones spending all day and night working on a web app. For the last 9 months. So we can all use it for free. Thanks. Bye.
Thomas would what, cancel his free account THAT COSTS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING AT ALL? I’m glad people like you are leaving. Go back to myspace.
I’m generally more sympathetic to Bryan Pearson’s views than Phasor Burn’s. That said I think it would be more helpful for Kris and Thomas to provide a regular (say twice daily) update on progress rather than to allow us the privilege of watching them endlessly on UStream, which is neither informative nor riveting telly!
Most of us genuinely support your work and appreciate your commitment to it: but many of us also feel disconnected from what’s going on and clueless about how long we’re going to have to wait.
bryan,
i appreciate your sentiment and support for the guys. the point is that while the fellas are driven by their passion to build the best photo-sharing site on the internet, zooomr is also a business. either this downtime will be the undoing of the site or mark iii will prove so brilliant as to relegate these frustrating few days to a charming anecdote. upon remembrance, one which brings a smile to mr. hawk’s face once he’s sold the company to google.
frankly, the most frustrating element of this downtime is the distraction of the obnoxious live stream. c’mon guys! get serious. turn off the camera and get it done already.
david,
of course the account is free! without members, zooomr is worth nothing! memebership drives the valuation of the company, potential advertising revenue, etc.
I don’t know guys. Why give us a 12-24hr figure if you know that its not realistic. You should have learned something from the disaster from the last planned released.
Its like Deja Vu all over again!
I don’t think most folks here are all too concerned with the business elements of this upgrade. Of course (I hope) we all want Zooomr to be successful and at least remain a viable going concern. I, for one, miss my Zooomr, but am certainly willing to deal with a couple days of inconvenience for the promise of what Mark III has to offer. I cannot wait to login for the first time. Good luck, guys.
I am willing to wait out the launch as I rather the data be kept intact and things run smooth after unveiling. I just joined zooomr but I am not going to feel like the end of the world is around the corner if I can’t upload some photos for 2 to even 4 days. My concern is more so that my photos that are already uploaded _are there_ when the launch is completed and I have no problems logging into my account so I can continue uploading.
Besides, not every change to a site runs smoothly - regardless of if the company behind that service is small or large. At least Kris and Thomas have not hidden themselves from the users (or non-users) of zooomr but willing to let folks watch live or chat with them during the launch. Not many folks are willing to open themselves to up - even after things took longer than when first (optimistically) speculated.
I’m with StevieB, UStream is not very helpful. More blog updates would be better. Good luck with the release, looking forward to try it out.
