Lauching Zooomr Mark III

by Thomas Hawk | 21 May 2007 | Adventures, Announcements, Development, System Notices, Video Blog | 39 Comments

Zooomr is off line right now while we make the transition from Zooomr V2 to Zooomr Mark III. We think it’s probably 12-24 hours until launch. Thanks for all your support! If you want to watch the launch live, you can do it here at UStream.

We’ve also set up a Pay Pal donate thing if people want to donate to help Zooomr.

Thanks all and see you in Mark III.

Sorry. I somehow missed the message above which clearly states that Zooomr will be down for a bit.
    I’ll be patient.

I’m certainly looking forward to trying out Mark III.

BTW, how are you guys going to pay for all the unlimited storage? Just donations???

How will wildly the popular users deal with people wanting to put portals on their images? Seems like there might be an overload of portals on a few select photographers.

For example, I’d imagine that you, Thomas Hawk, would find a flood of them from San Franciscans. I suppose you’d retain the rights to delete them (especially since you’re behind the scenes, too), but still.

The demo looks awesome, I can’t wait! And finally the personalized search, I’ve always wanted to search my own pictures :D I hope I’ll also be able to browse my own pictures with a certain tag, looks like I can. And Analytics sounds really, really cool, I love statistics!
Also, the map used to have a few annoyances (that it wouldn’t find the place) but it seems you’ve got that all covered now with this smart search system.

And don’t worry, you’ll get pictures tagged with Tokio Tower ;)

I do hope Creative Commons integration has improved too, because they’re very useful.

All in all, I think you’ve now caught up on and even exceeded Flickr, congrats!

I can’t believe I bought a Flickr Pro account (I use both Flickr and Zooomr) yesterday and blogged that “I might be kicking myself for spending money on Flickr when Zooomr Mark III comes out in a few months.”

As predictions go, I don’t think my timeline could have been more wrong!

  31. Juan Pablo Valenzuela said on 22 May 2007 at 1:33 pm:

The video looks promising. I hope this transition will be finish soon to explore the site for my own. Meanwhile, you can read my thoughts about “Why Google should buy Zooomr” in my blog.

Hey guys, thanks so much for the UStream (even with the problems). Being able to make some kind of connection to you guys while zooomr is down has made the upgrade much more bearable.
Plus, it’s been amazing to watch the community in action. It would be great if you guys could keep the chats semi-regular.
    Good luck!

  33. Anonymous Coward said on 22 May 2007 at 3:16 pm:

This is a joke. How the hell can an upgrade take 48 hours? And why can’t you make the existing service available during that time? I’ve never heard of this kind of thing — you guys really missed the boat being covered on TechCrunch, and being *down*. As well as promising an iminent release for THREE MONTHS.

  34. Fabydreams said on 22 May 2007 at 3:55 pm:

Kris, I love Zooomr. It’s the best. My pics in Zooomr… super. Thanks you; you are fantastic. And “…the sky is the limit…”

I have to agree with the AC above. Boasting about articles describing the new functionality (on TH’s blog in particular), and then not having it actually available is a terrible marketing strategy. Don’t even get me started on bragging so much about the marketplace, and not even having a launch date for it…

I sat around and waited anxiously for M3 the *first* time, so I have to admit I’m not so interested in waiting at the keyboard this time. That said, I hope the upgrade happens quickly this time, and if it doesn’t, that you don’t leave your users in the dark again. The fact is, whether you do all this for free or not, the users are what make it worth it.

Sure, you’ll have your die-hards that will sit and wait no matter what, but for everyone of those I bet there are at least 10 people who will casually brush off Zooomr without a second thought. In the game you’re trying to bust into, that’s a very important thing to realize.

Here’s hoping everything goes smoothly (and quickly).

    Poooftr Mark III - attempt number 2? 3? 17?

It appears that Zooomr is once again trying to break the land speed record for missing a published site-wide conversion/upgrade window. The other day they were to be down for 12-24 hrs and we’re somewhere past the 40 hour marker and still count…

  37. Trade Show Displays said on 23 May 2007 at 9:51 am:

Good luck on the launch guys, this looks great!

  38. Doh! said on 23 May 2007 at 11:50 am:

C’mon guys! Enuf’s enuf! 12 to 24 hours has come and gone…Quit flapping your jaws about how great the site WILL BE and get it up already. Honestly, I can’t for the life of me understand why you aren’t running parallel systems so that you could have kept MK2 up during your upgrade. It would have made more sense to freeze all uploads to Mk2 but still keep it up so users could access our photos, and browse others. I wonder how many people you will alienate by being down for days at a time both on your first aborted attempt and now your second try at rolling out Mk3?

Thomas, I’d be willing to bet a lot of $ that if you weren’t the CEO and were just a user of Zooomr, you would be quite vocal and critical of the way the upgrade has been handled, with services completely down for days at a time and users locked out of access to their photos. Something to think about…

  39. Disapponted said on 24 May 2007 at 3:25 am:

It’s now midday on the 24th and I still can’t view/access/do anything with my pictures.

I know it’s a free service and you guys are great (and don’t yet belong to the loathsome Yahoo!) but I’m very disapponted at this extended 3+ day downtime.
