Zooomr Mark III: Update Five! (A Must Read)

by Kristopher Tate | 18 March 2007 | Announcements, Development, General, System Notices, Video Blog | 105 Comments

Hey Friends! I’m still trekking through the Mark III release cycle over here with Resident British Guy Ben Metcalfe.

To keep everyone happy and continually uploading images, we’ve opted to put Zooomr Release Two back up temporarily for a few days while we get all of these Mark III bugs worked out of our system. :)

But, if that weren’t enough, I’m going to drop ALL LIMITS on uploading, storing and archiving the world’s photos. We believe in you guys!

So, with all of that said, expect to see Release Two back up by 9pm PDT.

With continued Love and Respect,

-Kristopher

I just want to point out, when K-Tate says “Resident” he doesn’t mean I’m living with him, ok!

We don’t want no rumors to start, ‘k??!?!

    Safe.

    Haha, duuuude, you’re so British.

Technically, I’m Canadian anyway Mr K-Tate.

    Canadian, eh?

Seriously though, good luck on finishing the Mark III rollout. I know you guys are working hard. Besides, I didn’t pay anything for my Mark II pro account, so I can’t really complain. :)

Guys, keep chugging away. We’ll all be here when you’re done! Just try and do a better job of working in some sleep ;-)

It’s great to see so many updates on the upgrade status. A lot of companies just leave their users in the dark.

Thanks for having such a great product!

    You guys…

  9. Kristopher Tate said on 18 Mar 2007 at 7:37 pm:

    @Liang, I hope it’s a good saying! :)

  10. Ben Metcalfe said on 18 Mar 2007 at 7:37 pm:

K-Tate wants me to explain I’m dual nationality.

I just wanted to say, I’ve seen Mark III and all I can say is, woah! I’ve not witnessed anything that hot since I paid $35 to see Paris Hilton’s home movies she forget to pay for in storage.

  11. Raoul said on 18 Mar 2007 at 7:40 pm:

Good choice, Kris! This takes the pressure off you to push Mark III out the door before cleaning out all the bugs. Don’t know what caused them in the first place, but these things happen.

Still look forward to Mark III, though it’ll be nice to upload some more photos to Zooomr in the meantime.

If you still need a beta tester for Mark III, you know where to reach me.

    Kris, thanks!
I believe that you chose the best way in this situation. However you’re making me busy for uploading photos and updating my blog with those photos :)
    It’s my pleasure, although.

Thanks! I finallt got around to using Zooomr (I have had an account for a while now) and to think I was thinking of renewing my pro subscription on Flickr!

I have this slight problem though, is it just me or does jUploader not authorize your account? Something about a bad http response?

  33. Nick said on 19 Mar 2007 at 6:12 am:

I had to reauthorise my account this morning and had no problems.

I did get a bad http response trying to view this blog earlier though.

  36. killercup said on 19 Mar 2007 at 7:17 am:

thanks for putting zooomr online again, althought it’s “just” mark II.

but: when you are able to put mark II that quickly, why aren’t you able to keep mark II and switch to mark III “with one click”, when it’s ready?

  37. Angad said on 19 Mar 2007 at 7:43 am:

I’m still having the authorization problem. It says “Got Bad HTTP Response(Status code 404)”, I know it’s not my connection as it authorizes flickr just fine.

    Any workarounds?

  38. BG said on 19 Mar 2007 at 7:44 am:

Sigh. I can be zen about the upgrade now. Mark III will be, when it is finally Mark III.

Taking Mark II down did a lot to build my anticipation. It made the upgrade more real, more desirable than any of the previous improvements.

Looking forward to the improvements, yet still happy with what I’ve got. Good luck!

  39. jonobass said on 19 Mar 2007 at 7:45 am:

Thanks for the update, Kris. It was a great idea to put Mk II back up, it must take the pressure off you a bit and means that there won’t be as much of a ’surge’ of uploading when Mk III goes on line.

I can’t wait for Mk III, but I will.

Dropping the limits is a nice touch, although my ‘Pro 4 Life’ status doesn’t sem so special now.

I too would confess to being “so British”….

  40. Julie said on 19 Mar 2007 at 7:54 am:

Thanks for re-instating MII for the time being. And I hope you’re getting some sleep!

  41. Angad said on 19 Mar 2007 at 7:55 am:

Alright I used an older release of jUploader i.e. 1.1.1 and not 1.1.2 and it authorized just fine now!
I’m uploading stuff as I speak!

  42. Charles said on 19 Mar 2007 at 8:04 am:

    Kris,
Zooomr provides the best service which I cannot live without. Although you remove all the limitations which were set on the accounts, I am worried that this might not be a good idea because this might cause you a huge amount of costs. There are so many internet companies which disappeared like bubbles, and I cannot tolerate it if this happens on zooomr. When you are doing something which benefits all the users of zooomr, maybe it is also necessary to consider how to maintain this best service. Maybe I am thinking too much cuz maybe you have already got some plans in your mind. Anyway, I just hope zooomr can be the best forever!

  43. Benjamin Watt said on 19 Mar 2007 at 8:33 am:

jonobass: I think Kristopher or Thomas have talked about still doing something for Pro users, so the ‘Pro 4 Life’ status may still mean something over and beyond the already very cool “We were there in the beginning”. It just won’t be about upload limits.

  44. Thomas Hawk said on 19 Mar 2007 at 8:42 am:

Guys, Zooomr’s longer-term monetization strategy is built around allowing all photographers everywhere to be able to sell their photos on an opt-in basis. We believe that on a longer-term basis Zooomr can operate on a 10% cut from the sale of stock photography combined with advertising on our free accounts.

While we are disappointed about the trouble that we ran into during our conversion we are positive longer-term about the ability for all of you to be able to sell your photos online and believe that the revenue generated from this venture will support Zooomr.

Thanks to everyone for their patience.

  45. Gary said on 19 Mar 2007 at 9:41 am:

Thomas - That sounds like a good strategy, on the surface, but I wonder if selling stock photos will be enough. That market seems pretty tough. I don’t mind the google ads, so if they stick around with Mark III to help out, great. I even occasionally click one.

The unlimited free stuff is fabulous. I’ll support Zooomr in any way I can and hope it works out. Thanks for all the work, and getting Mark II back up in the interim.

  46. killercup said on 19 Mar 2007 at 10:57 am:

    Why?

    2) Virginal market in Montreal and no competition.

    3) Realistically, I offer you substantial revenue, do not let me go with another investor.

The engraver, the business plan, samples… all is ready.

I’d like to talk to you on the phone or IM, I’ll answer your questions and arrange an appointment.

A 15 -20 min presentation a coffee shop would suffice, I know my business, I’ll go to the point.

Forgive me if this was discussed already, but the new version of jUploader is not working now. That version that is linked to on Zooomr is for Mark III.

You will have to use version 1.1

    http://downloads.sourceforge.net/juploadr/jUploadr-1.1.2-win32_x86.zip?modtime=1173943560&big_mirror=0

Hope this helps if you were having problems uploading with jUploader.

  55. Charles said on 19 Mar 2007 at 4:21 pm:

Within 24 hours, I have already uploaded more than 100 photos with jUploadr 1.1.2. I did not change any settings and it just worked…

    March 15th, 2007

So Kris Tate from Zooomr IMs me today to let me know that they’re releasing Mark III and I need to update the URL that jUploadr uses to connect to Zooomr. So, I rolled a couple builds of 1.1.2 and made sure to compile them with Java 1.4 –even the Mac builds.

    ———————-

It looks like you may have problems if you recently downloaded the program. If should work if you are using the version that you downloaded prior to March 15th.

  57. Ender said on 19 Mar 2007 at 8:46 pm:

Will Mark III be able to tell what orientation I took my photo from the EXIF data and auto rotate? I just tested this now with Mark II and it’s not working for me. I’m considering switching to Zooomr from smugmug but I might not if i have to manually rotate my photos. Flickr does this for me without having to do anything extra to get it to work.

  58. Natx said on 20 Mar 2007 at 9:15 am:

Totally agree with Ender. And what is even worst, the rotation sometimes simply doesn’t work properly (resizing the pictures instead of rotating)

The upload menu could also be improved with a drag&drop method, so we don’t have to pick one by one.

And when uploading… it takes ages, and you have no feedback of the percentage completed. And several times after having sent several pictures it just stops, and even half an hour after it didn’t uploaded any picture at all.

These are the reasons (plus the painfully sloooow loading times) why I was thinking about stop using Zooomr. I do really look forward for the release of Mark III, but take your time, coz it is worst to decive the expectations than just having to wait for long.
    Regards

Well, just note that I was trying to be constructive with the previous comment
    :D
    Good luck!

  60. Taavi said on 20 Mar 2007 at 11:33 am:

Hey, man, I guess you’re using the web upload. Use jUploadr! It’s totally drag and drop. (Just google for it ;) )

  61. eddie said on 20 Mar 2007 at 2:58 pm:

    @Natx:

I had the same problem with rotating. But then it sorta inexplicably solved itself.

What I think happens is, if you click on ‘rotate’, it resizes the image in weird ways, but if you go click on the ‘big’ size image, it’s rotated. So the thumbnail just needs to be regenerated, which it does… sometime, I’m just not sure when.

I was figuring that Mark III will fix that, or if not, then Kris should have some time then to open it up to fixes. Who knows, I suppose. ;) Poor guy is probably overwhelmed as it is.

    Anyhow, hope that helps.

  62. Thomas said on 20 Mar 2007 at 3:49 pm:

I mostly hope, that zoomr will get something comparable to flickr’s organizr.
With > 3,000 photos, its quite essential.

  63. børge said on 20 Mar 2007 at 5:49 pm:

Hey, guys! I’m looking forward to Mark III. I haven’t switched over from Flickr yet because I like their simple interface and, more importantly, because the social aspect that I feel Flickr is much better at. I really hope that’s going to change with Mark III!
I also hope that you will add an easy “import pictures from Flickr” function, so that the transition will be as seamless as possible. Flickr does provide an API for that, so why not use it..

  66. range said on 21 Mar 2007 at 3:02 am:

I can upload with jUploadr, but can’t through the website anymore. I guess this message: “it appears that your account is full.”

With jUploadr, I have uploaded at least 1000 pictures. I still have a backlog of over 2000. Trips to Thailand and Hong Kong.

  67. Alistair MacDonald said on 21 Mar 2007 at 4:04 am:

I must confess my first move was to upload my image collection and had jUploadr fail after uploading about 1200 images with only 11 to go.

Amusingly I also get the message “Sorry, your account appears to be full!” on the same screen as “We’ve gone ahead and REMOVED ALL LIMITS forever” when clicking “Upload” on the site.

With 1000 images to finish tagging, geotagging and sharing I have plenty to get done, but it does appear that one of the limits is still in place.

    Keep up the good work.

as a current and fairly satisfied user of flickr, i’m quite intrigued by zooomr. especially with the newly announced unlimited upload and storage capacities. sooo …. i’m considering moving all of my photos over to your service as i’m one of those folks who could benefit from saving even $24.95 a year off of my budget. my question is: is this permanent or will the unlimited be lowered back down to a limited amount when the zooomr is farther along? second question: will this negate the need for any pro accounts or will there be features added later that you would only get via an enhanced pro account? you seem to be doing a good job so far. i hope someone will have time to answer my two questions. wait … i have a third: is there any current way to import photos from flickr directly into a zooomr account? this isn’t a major issue either way as i do have juploader even for my kubuntu linux system! thanks to anyone who can answer my inquiries!

  80. Kristopher Tate said on 27 Mar 2007 at 5:09 pm:

    myke,

We will never go back to limits on storing, uploading or limiting the sharing of your photos.

We will be adding helpful features for pro account holders to sell their photos — all users will be able to sell their photos at whatever price they feel like, keeping 90% of the transaction.

We’ve been working with Flickr for API access to their system to help those who want to migrate their photos from Flickr to Zooomr.

    Hope that answers your questions,

    -Kristopher

  81. myke said on 27 Mar 2007 at 6:28 pm:

    kristopher,

Thanks for answering my questions quickly and directly yourself. That’s good customer service!

A little bit more … I’ve been bumping around zooomr and playing with uploading, tagging, sets, etc. … & have a couple of questions (again). Can you batch organize photos? If so, I can’t figure out how to do so. Also, when I created my first set (and did so via a tag) and then uploaded new pics and marked most with the the same tag, they were not automatically added to the set. At least they haven’t appeared in the set so far. Does it take some time for the system to catch the new photos and auto add them to a set or do I need to do this myself some how? I haven’t quite figured this out either. Also, when I create a set based on a tag(s), it is only pulling from my personal photos based on the tag(s), right? Sets and easy organizing are important features for me. As flickr limits free users to 3 sets, it is quite enticing to not have such a limitation here.

  82. myke said on 27 Mar 2007 at 6:50 pm:

PS — I think the set question got answered. After I reloaded the page after a few minutes, all of the newly uploaded photos showed up in the set I created. So the only question I have relating to the sets now is whether or not they are only pulled from personal tags when you set them up? Probably a bit of a stupid sounding question but I thought you’d have a huge set if you created one with a tag and it pulled from everyone’s photos!

Things are looking good with your service. Congrats on the innovations. I hope I can continue to figure out things. I still need to figure out how to batch organize my photos (if you can) … ;)

  83. myke said on 27 Mar 2007 at 7:01 pm:

PS 2 - One last thing (I swear) I can’t figure out … what are “portals”? I don’t know why I’d create one, how to, or what they are for!

  84. Darke said on 27 Mar 2007 at 11:45 pm:

    myke:
Actually sets do pull photos from everyone by default, but there is currently a limit on how many photos will appear in a set so you don’t get huge sets. You have to add a conditional to the set to restrict them to only yours. Just choose ‘owner’ from the ‘add’ menu when you edit the set and type in your name.

Portals are basically a little window on a photo which links to another photo. You can use them in various ways, maybe the most obvious is for example you may have a wide angle shot of a scene, and a another closer up shot of something in the scene as a portal so the user can click through for a closer view. To add one you just click the add portal button along the top of a photo, choose what photo you want the portal to link to, and move/resize the window as you will.

There is no way to organise your photos at present, they just stay in upload order. I’m crossing my fingers that this will change in mark 3!

    Dear Kristopher and Thomas,

Please could you give us a new timeframe for Mark III. Teasers of new features are all very well and good, but your users and the community you have built deserve a little more feedback with regards to the status of the whole operation.

We’re basically sitting in the dark here. I’m sure one of you has some time to write a few paragraphs outlining the current situation.

Or am I missing something? Is there somewhere else I should be looking for this information?

    Regards,
    Dave.

What ever happened to Mark III? Was that just some early April Fool’s joke?
