Sometimes there is something about a printed picture. I know that I lose sight from time to time of the beauty of a printed photograph when dealing so much with digital photography and online photo sharing. Thanks to Hawkeye for reminding us of that with his photo above. And congrats too to Pranav who turned one month old on Sunday. Thanks for sharing Hawkeye!

Zooomr Mark III : Open Letter to the World

Zooomr Mark III Logo

Good-evening, everyone — It’s Kristopher.

Over the past 3-4 months, I’ve been working on extending Zooomr into an even more Universal website.

Today, the world is regionalized — From DVDs to Video Games and even photo sharing — the universal nature of photos is still locked-down to regions.

Now, the Web gives us an inspiring opportunity to change all of this and even though that may be so, many have still opted to regionalize these universal experiences. Experiences of birthdays, of children — friends and loved ones — even the ones that are almost out-of-this-world.

I started Zooomr a little more than a year ago to change all of this. I started Zooomr to help share my photos to my friends and family members around the world — and, thanks to this, many more have, as well.

Today, I’d like to take a moment to expand on this and offer a bit of direction into where we’re going with Zooomr. Simply put, we are going to become the photo sharing website and social community for the entire world.

“Wow, what a bold statement,” right? I’ve always pushed the envelope and I think it’s about time we pushed it even further.

As time quickly moves forward, the methods we will take to augment this bold statement will become much more clear under the name “Zooomr Mark III”.

In the end, Please be patient with us, but please do not hesitate to contribute. Zooomr is not great on its own — it’s all about our community — and that means people like you.

As Mark3 draws near, I will have much more information to share with you.

So, until then,

Thanks for listening & goodnight.

Using SmartSets to Find Great Photos on Zooomr

One of the things that I like to do is play around with different SmartSets to find cool and interesting photos on Zooomr. We are going to be adding favourites as a SmartSet criteria here shortly, but in the meantime I’m using views as a gauge of sorts. Today, for instance, I created a SmartSet using the following criteria: show me any photos where tag matches bw or neon with 10 views or more. You can see the set here and see how I edited it. I particularly like black and white photos and photos of neon, which is why I used those tags.

So this SmartSet pulled up a bunch of really cool images for me and one of my favorites was this one by dawn m. armfield. But while exploring that shot I found the shot above which I loved even more and thought I’d post up on the Zooomr blog today. Thanks for sharing your great work Dawn.

SmartSets can be used not just for your own work but can be used to filter great work by others. Do you have any favorite SmartSet combinations that you’ve created to find great photos? Do you have any particular tag/view combinations that have pulled up some great phtography? If so post a comment I’d love to check them out.

In addition to adding favorites to SmartSets we are going to page SmartSets to allow you more than 175 photos in a set going forward. This will be coming with our next major release for Zooomr. We are taking a little more time with our next release but it will be worth it. I’m sure you’ll hear more from Kristopher on that in the coming days.

Funkyboy writes that this is what he sees every morning on the train. Somehow I think his commute along the cost of Italy is a bit more scenic than mine on the BART train from the East Bay to San Francisco under the Bay. Thanks for sharing Funkyboy!

Diving for Favorites

Diving for FavoritesDiving for Favorites Hosted on Zooomr

One of my favorite things to do on Zooomr is to go diving for favorites. I love favoriting a photo. There’s something I just love about clicking on that little empty heart above a photo and turning it full. And there is so much great photography on Zooomr to fave.

So the way that I go diving for favorites is by looking through other Zooomr member’s favorites collections to see if they have any shots that I would also like to fave. So far I’ve collected over 31 pages of favorites on Zooomr. If you’d like to see my faves to see if there are any that you might also want to fave feel free to here. Kristopher’s also faved a bunch of photos that you can see here.

Have you faved a lot of shots on Zooomr? I’d love to go favorite diving in your favorite stream as well, so feel free to leave a link in the comments section to your own favorites on Zooomr.

And if you haven’t started faving photos yet on Zooomr, it’s easy. You just click on the little empty heart above a photo when you want to fave it. You have to be logged in in order to fave photos. And if you want to see if anyone has fany shots of yours be sure to check out your recent activity page. You may need to scroll through the timeline a little bit to see if anyone has faved or commented on a shot of yours.
