ZMail is Live
Thanks for your patience over the course of the past two days. We are happy to announce that Zmail is now live. Check it out by clicking on the little envelope at the top of a page next to your name. You can now compose and send messages to your Zooomr friends.
While Zmail is not meant to be a replacement for your regular email, we think it will be a helpful tool for people to use to communicate with each other on Zooomr.
To compose a message to someone just start typing their name and you should see their avatar pop up. We hope you like seeing the avatars in the Zmail system.
A couple of the nice built in features with Zmail are the ability to send Zmails to multiple recipients, a little eye icon to tell you when someone has viewed your zmail and a nice rich text editor allowing you to bold, italicize, or include http hyperlinks into your messages to your friends.
So feel free to give someone a Zmail the next time you see yourself in one of their photos that they need to peopletag you with or if you want to tell them how cool their photography is or if you just want to make a new friend.
Please let us know what you think about Zmail and if their are other mail based features you would like to see on Zooomr.

Congrats. I will Zmail you now.
I hope Groooper is up next. We need more community on Z.

zooomr is one of the first things i’d consider PAYING for (website, shareware, etc)
I got a free pro account, i’m no better than anyone else, my pictures suck…but I’d seriously consider paying. anyway, all this is leading up to saying that my opinion doesn’t matter…
BUT…
i HATE…HATE…HATE…external emails. social networking sites, especially. I always wish i’d have an option to communicate through my regular (g)mail, even if it passes through an anonymizer at the host site. I just hate having seperate things like that.
anyway, love zooomr guys. thanks, keep up the hard work. hope it pays off.

I am really liking this. I will play around with the Zmail a bit more tomorrow, but the only thing I can think of that would be nice is a way to click on either someones profile or icon directly to send them a Zmail.
For instance, if someone comments on a photo, there is no simple way to reply to them directly unless they are alaready in your social circle, etc. Sometimes it is nice to be able to communicate with people outside of your direct social circle.
Unless I am missing something here…in which case, forget what I just said.
Also, will comments now show up in Zmail?
Thanks again for all you have done!

Thanks cmiper. You can send a zmail to anyone, even those outside your contacts. You just start typing their name and it should suggest people to you. You do of course have to know their name.
We are working on adding comment notifications into zmail. Should be here shortly.
Steven,
I hear what you are saying. Which is why we are building an option to have everything in your zmail account auto forward to your regular email account if you prefer to set it up this way.
Russell, groups are coming.
Thanks all.

Thomas
Thanks for clearing that up.
The “suggest” portion is not quite doing what you mentioned at the moment. You *can* send directly to a username, but it only suggests names for those who are already in your social circle. For eveyone else, it relies on the sender to have the name correct. It’s good enough for my needs, but it is not entirely functioning as mentioned.
Thanks again!

The email feature I’m lusting after is “upload by email”. I use that feature every day to upload my photos to Flickr, and then automatically post it to my blog. Works a treat and simple.
One other thing that would be great is future posting - I’m heading away for a few days now and I have a little script setup to email flickr with my photos each day. If they were already uploaded and waiting for the signal to “blog this” and appear I’d be sold.
Love the trackback feature

cniper - it makes sense the way they do it. Otherwise you could have a suggest box with hundreds of names!

Hate to be slightly negative but you guys are a photo sharing site and you are about 60% done with the functionality I would like to see there. I dont understand why this is necessary, I have gmail why do I need this?
Some of the stuff I would like to see:
- notify me when someone posts a picture and geotags it within a certain radius of where I live
- link out to picture printing services, both for my account and visitors to print/pay for my pics
- ability to network with other photographers and a notification of when someone I am interested in posts a new picture.
- thumbs up/thumbs down picture, and therefore a list of the top pictures. Dont see the point of the current ‘person with most pictures’ its encouraging people to upload 100 identical baby pictures and suchlike

I just want to say that Zmail is nice but I think that Zooomr may work properly before adding those new features.
Since yesterday I can not see my photos page (http://beta.zooomr.com/photos/gregoire) nor my smartsets page.
And since I have open my account I can not obtain the welcomemat page without passing by the so famous ‘Uh-Oh’ page.
It is painful.

I agree with gareth thomas. (except for the most pictures part. In my case it’s encouraging me to just do more photography, and as unique as possible.)
And Gareth, why do you need Zmail?
Because, there used to be no way (besides spamming the comments field) to reach a person, if he/she hadn’t inculded his/her email in the profile.

Someone Zmail me (SaxMan), I have no friends.
In response to requests for features, I’m sure Kris is working on lots of stuff. He puts these features on-line as they become ready. I don’t think it’s a matter of Zmail instead of other stuff. It was just ready first.

loving it loving iiiitt.
groups would be sweet
and i concur with this idea
“notify me when someone posts a picture and geotags it within a certain radius of where I live”
anyhoo, keep up the great work kris and thomas et all.

I agree with Gareth Thomas. ZMail is only useful for people with lots of friends who use the site as a photo-social site. For those of us who just use it as a photo site this is a non-feature. My two top requests:
1. Make it easier to set licensing for large groups of photos. Either by setting a default for all new uploaded photos, or by exposing licensing in the API so that jUploadr can do it, or by something else.
2. Have a better system (other than posting comments on your blog!!) for dealing with suggests, complaints, bugs, etc!
Thanks for all the hard work! The site is looking greater every day!

rght now all the “Recent Geotagged Photos in my area” are mine. Not very useful.
I would also like to see one photo from 4 social circle members instead of 4 from one member.

FYI,
When I sent a Zmail to Saxman (above) Zmail did not autodiscover Saxman, but it did find it correctly after I sent the message.

And a nice email it was. Thank you Russell.
