More Examples of Portals

CNET has a nice write up out on Portals at Zooomr here. To see how Rafe Needleman used Portals to share a tour of CNET, click on this photo and then follow his tour of portals.

Here’s another example of a portal from my photo shoot with Robert Scoble last night. Just hover over Robert and then click and zooom through to the next photo to get a sense of how portals work.

Do you have an interesting portal? Leave a link in the comments of this post so we can check them out.

Oh, and if you are a blogger and want a free 2.5GB per month Pro account from Zooomr we have an offer still going. Sign up for Zooomr and host one photo on your blog and then submit the link to our Proitizer and we’ll upgrade you to Pro for free. More details here.

I’ve got quite many photos …portalized?
They’re all intertwined so one can travel quite far in this manner.

For a starting picture i would give this: http://beta.zooomr.com/photos/fipsut/115558

Here’s my first shot at portals. I can keep these in mind while shooting now. Great feature!

  3. brad77 Says:

Nice one, Ben. Here’s a portal of the astronomical clock in Prague. It’s four levels deep.

  4. Thomas Hawk Says:

Hey Ben, that’s a great one. Good use for a baseball stadium. Thanks for sharing that.

  5. N. Godbout Says:

What about being able to put notes on other peoples photos? Is that a feature that we might be able to expect?

Hey Thomas, we’ve been experimenting with portals too. This is a short trip across London, UK. Hope you like it.

  10. Navdeep Says:

Here is my usage of it..

Is there a way to ‘go back’ to the original picture after clicking through the portal?

Btw; I LOVE THIS FEATURE! Can’t wait for you guys to release the bulk uploader..

  11. cmiper Says:

    Navdeep
Why not just make another portal back to the first photo?

Also, I just noticed something kind of neato about the Notes feature. You can use code in the note and put photos in the notes.

    Example here

  12. Navdeep Says:

Hi cmiper; I can do as you suggested. But then I would kinda lose the ‘effect’ of going ‘into/inside’ a picture.. kinda like a portal ;)

  13. Taavi Says:

The abilty to use code in notes is just fab. Really opens up the possibilities.

    Example here: Link

Portals are just perfect! (except for the bugs) It turns a photoalbum into a storybook.

  14. Gareth Hall Says:

    Thomas, Kris,

I love Zooomr. I love the innovations that you are delivering in each release. I really want to continue using it and directing my entire family and all friends to my home page, but they all use IE, as do 98% of people!

Please can you address the layout issues with the homepage, and the other issues that have been highlighted by other people leaving comments.

    THank you,
    Gareth

  15. cmiper Says:

You could make a note with a link to the start, or a link to the start in the description?

    Otherwise…I don’t know. :(

  16. Navdeep Says:

When you guys talk about code inside a note; do you refer to ‘html code’?

  17. Thomas Hawk Says:

Navdeep, that is a super cool Portal. Gareth, sorry about the IE6 thing. It is at the top of our list of things to fix. We’re certainly aware of the templating issue and hope to have it fixed soon.

Kristopher is our only developer and needs to sleep a few hours every now and again but we will get things fixed for IE6. Kristopher and I in fact were looking at it on Friday and trying to figure out a way to make it work.

If anyone with strong CSS skills in IE6 standards has any advice or could point us to a resource on why the templating might be off we would very much appreciate it. But we are working on it in the meantime.

    Thanks for using Zooomr.

    Best,

    Tom

  18. cmiper Says:

    Navdeep - Yes, HTML.

You can create links, or embed images, or both. Seems that might be the extent of it, I tried copying the pre-built code from the “all sizes” page and it locks up during the “Saving” process.

  19. Oblomov Says:

Thomas, Kris, I’m not sure what you mean by templating, but the IE6 problem might have a solution just as simple as enlarging content_wrapper by a couple of pixel (maybe 5?), see also this comment of mine: http://blog.zooomr.com/2006/08/22/portals-have-been-up-for-2-hours-now/#comment-4225

BTW, you guys should really put up a forum to discuss these issues.

  20. Thomas Hawk Says:

Thanks Oblomov. We will have a forum like this up to discuss these issues in the near future.

    Tom

I’ve created a ‘Warp Portal’. A portal of similar scenes at different places. You can travel 130 KM with a mousclick. Check http://beta.zooomr.com/photos/10542@Z01/145774

  22. tim Says:

    Hey Kris,

Great work on the portal thing. My silly little contribution is not all that great, but it does have a zooomrtation.

One little tweak I’d like to see is a larger box to type in (or one which automatically sizes) for notes.

Great new feature guys. Here’s my contribution:

  25. Taavi Says:

    Tim,

    Great zooomrtation!
If only it didn’t end while I surf through portals of the same place.

Maybe this kind of thing could be done? So that the picture owner can choose when the zooomrtation ends. For example I’d like to choose that the music wouldn’t end with the portals of this photo, but would end with other pages.

  26. William Tan Says:

Excellent features, I blogged about it and stitched together an portal of Casa Batllo in Barcelona with 8 photos: http://beta.zooomr.com/photos/dready/155230

Here’s my portals contribution. 37 interlocking photos to create an exhaustive documentation of my room.

  28. Gareth Hall Says:

    Kris, Thomas,

This portal functionality is serious fun! It is really going to change the way I take photos!

Anyway, I’ve had a quick go, done something a bit different, where I’ve gone from a photo at night to a photo at day, portals can take you anywhere!

Look forward to the IE fix.

Cheers for all your hardwork which no doubt will be seriously rewarded in the near future!

  29. tim Says:

Taavi, what a great idea that is. Zooomrtations which follow the portal. Maybe you could chose to change the soundtrack when certain photos are clicked or keep the same music going.
