Official Zooomr Launch Slightly Delayed
by Thomas Hawk | 14 July 2006 | Announcements | 49 Comments
Well I suppose it serves us right for running a countdown timer to our launch at 5pm today, but Zooomr has been under a massive denial of service (DOS) attack all day and it has forced us to delay our launch by a few hours or so. We think we will have it up and running at 7pm Pacific Daylight Time assuming we can clear up this vicious attack.

:/ How much are they shooting your way, traffic wise? A few mbit/s?
Or is it just a lot of interest?!
I’m afraid I’m going to miss the launch - am in the UK, and roughly 0300 is a little late for me tonight!
Good luck, and see you in the morning…
Why’s someone always gotta be a clown? Don’t worry, Zooomr. We’ll be waiting patiently for ya.
Am I allowed to post my screen shot of the stopped countdown clock to my zooomr 2.0 account or can I only load photos? Oooops, no that’s a rival service restriction
It’s not really sending us any data it’s just opening connections.
Maybe we could kill the time looking at Jill Greenburg collections (only kidding Thomas - I am equally appalled by her photos). Then again, if she could do the same theme with the people responsible for your DOS!
Hmm I was gonna say, maybe it’s all of us sitting here hitting refresh waiting for it to come online
I wish Mark, it’s been happening all day long.
Damn those bitter spiteful arseholes! Hope all goes well with sorting it out
Bastards…… well they can’t keep us down, good luck and keep up the great work!!!
Good luck guys, hope it goes well
Why would they send DOS attacks all day long? Why not only up until the launch? Wouldn’t that be more effective?
I may be a bit guilty. I have checked the page many times throughout the day to see if anything was going on.
@Tomas Hawk:
If that’s the problem and it’s on port 80. Lower your keepalive way down. (in the 3-5 range) That helps a lot.
[…] Update: Apparently Zooomr has been under an denial of service attack all day. Thomas Hawk says they should be up and running by 7pm. […]
Well, I’m not going to wait up any longer [yes I stayed up till 0130 waiting for Zooomr to come back up, am I sad, or what? :)]
Night folks: Kris, Michael & Thomas - good luck getting it all sorted out, and look forward to hopping on in the morning.
Maybe it’s FlickR, those guys are out to get you, I tell ya (Well technically Zooomr is, but you know what I mean).
I’m not familiar with DOS and stuff of the sort, but cant you guys just check the IP and ban it or something.
Sohil, the IP addresses are being spoofed. Whoever’s attacking us is very powerful and they are sending the attack from zombie machines.
@ Thomas:
Is there anything that can be done? And what are DOS attacks capable of?
So Sorry to hear that, I wish you all the best (I’ll check the site again tomorrow)
Israeli hackers?
@Boo:
DOS == Denial Of Service. All it does is flood the server with requests so that regular ones can’t come in.
[…] Wurde also doch nichts aus dem groß angekündigten Launch von Version 2.0 des Flickr-Konkurrenten: Well I suppose it serves us right for running a countdown timer to our launch at 5pm today, but Zooomr has been under a massive denial of service (DOS) attack all day and it has forced us to delay our launch by a few hours or so. @Boo
DOS means Denial Of Service. I think DOS attacks knock out serves or something. This was what I think BlueFrog did to Spammers and Spammers did the same thing to shut BlueFrog.

I wonder how you can have the blog photos, the countdown site and the blog running while suffering from a DDOS?
Port 80 is still port 80, right? And both of your IP addresses seem to serve content…
Are you sure, you’re not experiencing some other sort of problem? Tell me, if you need a hand…
There are people who are willing and ready to go if the help is needed. Just say the word. :\
@yeah
You are right, it looks strange.
I think they just didn’t stress test their new code

Poor kids…
Please take 5 minutes and trim those fingernails.
Yes, I hate those DOS attacks. Second only to the dreaded Windows attacks. When those suckers hit your hosts, you might as well just throw them out the window and start over.
Now DDoS attacks - that’s another story entirely!
Seriously though, good luck shutting it down - hope your upstream provider’s being helpful. Maybe they can take it off your hands so you can finish up the launch instead?

[…] Well, it sucks. I was hoping that tonight I would be able to test out the whole new Zooomr launch and explore the uber goodness that was suppose to be launched earlier tonight at 5pm (PDT). But unfortunately that’s not going to happen according to the Zooomr crew. It seems that many sites are being hacked tonight, in fact. I had received an email earlier from Game Zone | Evolution from someone who was able to crack their vBulletin database. […]
What is the deal with those long ass fingernails on Kris the genius?
noticed that too ? weird. clean up!
Have you called the FBI to report the DOS attack, or did you make it up?
DOS attack, really?
Show us some proof
What does a dude’s fingernails have to do with his ability to code? I mean he got a web startup to contend with Yahoo!’s Flickr service, and he at least has tact with public relations.
You sit behind anonymity and throw rude comments on a privately owned blog that no adult would ever conceive of saying to another adult out of common decency. What’s your contribution, you Mr. Helpfuls and Thing-For-Yourselfers?
^^ Well said, Spinfist!
Well one thing’s for sure… some people have no life so they must piss and moan about whatever insignificant thing they can think of… GET A LIFE…. and on a brighter and much more important note… SOOO looking forward to Zooomr 2.0’s launch and the wait will definitely be worth it!! Thanx Kris, Michael and Thomas for all the hard work!!
I’m getting so sick of the negative comments here and on the TechCrunch thread. Hang in there Zoomr guys - there are a lott of people looking forward to this 2.0 launch.
Cheers and regards !!
Animo ! Ustedes pueden

Best of luck. It’s really too bad that people are DOSing a truly great sight like Zooomr. I look forward to seeing 2.0.

Je vous parlais dans mon précédent billet du compte à rebours qu’avait imaginé Zooomr pour lancer la nouvelle version de son service de partage et de stockage de photos en ligne. Malheureusement pour eux et pour leurs utilisateurs, le nouveau
Not to worry. Carry on… we’ll be here, ready to geo-tag our little hearts out with the new and improved Zooomr2.0 when you’ve fought back the baddies and get back on track with the launch.

[…] After a bit of technical difficulty, which bumped the release of the new Zooomr platform back a few days (originally planned for Friday, July 14th), Zooomr 2.0 has finally hit the ‘net. I assume this is actually version 2.0 of the beta because the site still redirects (as of Tuesday morning) to the beta.zooomr.com server and the logo still reads “beta.” But then again, since it seems that “beta” is the hot thing in “web 2.0″ trends, so maybe I’m totally wrong.
