On to Portland, Oregon

Wednesday, June 21st, 2006

So, why Portland? Portland is the home of an up-and-coming company called JanRain.

JanRain and it’s awesome employees are very special to us because they handle most of our user accounts on Zooomr — not to mention that they are behind a new identity technology that is very promising, called OpenID.

I’m going up there for a few days to straighten-out this whole login mess that we’ve got going on here, as well as jamming with them for a few days to make Zooomr 2 even better.

Feel free to drop me a line if you’re in the Portland, Oregon area.

I’ll be checking-in, as always.

Thanks,

Kristopher Tate

Mr. Chalk is in the House

Hosted on Zooomr

Ok, so I’m not so sure yet if having Mr. Chalk at Zooomr is more of a blessing or a curse. But either way he certainly will have some interesting photos to say the least. Check out this zooomrtation when you click through to this photo — and it is definitely not me in this photo even though Mr. Chalk says it is.

I was interviewed on Zooomr for the podcast G’Day World earlier this afternoon. We talk about Zooomr, our future plans, our future and current features and the need for open portability and exchange for user’s photos and data. A fun interview from a great podcast and show. Thomas Hawk joins Zooomr

Monday, June 19th, 2006

Some exciting news today, Everyone.

Thomas Hawk, one of the coolest bloggers and photographers around, has just posted some words on why he has decided to join and what his new involvement here at Zooomr will entail.

Thomas will become Zooomr’s ‘Chief Evangelist’ and employee no. 2.

For the longest time, I wondered how long I could go as a one-man development team — and the answer is pretty far — Surprisingly to the extent where Zooomr has been written-up in newspapers around the globe.

And, while being a one-man development team has its perks, there is one area where I wish I could have some help, and that’s community — Thomas understands the community. He knows great people and new people alike — he also understands how communities interoperate. You will see that Zooomr will become more rapidly community operated. You will see many new features in Zooomr 2 that will make it a much more community driven site, most of which can be attributed to Thomas’ involvement.

So, it is with great enthusiasm that today with Thomas, we are announcing his joining of Zooomr.

In his own words:

So Flickr did a lot for me. It encouraged my photography, it inspired me, it created lasting friendships. And I am today really, really into it. I started a Flickr blog. I post virtually every day on Flickr. etc. I still love Flickr and will always love Flickr. But…

About two months ago Mike Arrington wrote a blog post about a “Flickr on Steroids”. This, as you would imagine, greatly peaked my interest. After Mike’s post I took a look at Zooomr myself. And I really really liked the potential.

Since then and over the course of the past few months I’ve gotten to know Kristopher Tate, Zooomr’s founder and only employee, a bit better. Kris Tate is this ambitious 18 year old software genius.

[…] This decision to join Zooomr, by the way, is in no way meant to imply that Flickr is not great. On the contrary. I spent a bit of time last night talking on the phone with Stewart Butterfield from Flickr about my decision to join Zooomr. How it represents for me personally a unique opportunity to jump into the tech startup world hands on. How working with Kris will give me an opportunity to influence many more of the great features that I feel ought to be developed from a photogeek perspective. Why I felt it an exciting opportunity and one I ought to pursue.

Welcome aboard, Thomas!

Tuesday, June 6th, 2006

I hope everyone is enjoying their week! The weather has been pretty spectacular today.

Though, I have a goodie for people to play with until Zooomr 2 shortly arrives. It’s called ZWidget and it utilizes some of Zooomr 2’s new TagMap features and Google’s Personalized Homepage. Here’s what it looks like:

Quotas reset for June!

Thursday, June 1st, 2006

Hey Everyone, June looks to be a great month for Zooomr.

I’ve just reset everyone’s quotas to start-off the month as usual and wanted to let everyone know that Zooomr 2 is almost here as well!

Lastly, Zooomr user Chrono has posted his review of the new speed in his blog here. Check it out and then please let me know your thoughts on the new speed, as it would help me a lot!

Thanks,

Kristopher Tate
