When a photo is submitted to a group, other members of that group can add notes, information, tags, etc, but the normal security settings are retained for everyone else viewing it. There will be a new geotagging utility (I forget the name) that will hopefully handle all those methods of tagging. The sets (SmartSets) will definitely be worth the wait as well, trust me!
